Die algerische Agentur zur Förderung von Kohlenwasserstoff-Ressourcen (Alnaft) gab am 18. Sept 2013 bekannt, Algerien benötige ein US$ 300 Mrd Investment, um jährlich 60 Mrd m³ Schiefergas zu produzieren.

Demzufolge werde man in den nächsten 50 Jahren 12.000 Brunnen bohren müssen, also 240 neue Brunnen pro Jahr, um diese Produktionsmenge zu erreichen.

Algerische Reserven an Schiefergas
Laut einer Studie des auf Energie-Forschung spezialisierten IHS-Institutes, welche vor kurzem veröffentlicht wurde, sind die Schiefergas-Reserven in Algerien größer als die der USA in Texas.
Der Bericht zeigt, dass Schiefergas-Felder in den 23 vielversprechendsten Regionen außerhalb der Vereinigten Staaten und Kanadas vorhanden sind, die die mit mehr als 175 Milliarden Barrel riesige Reserven speichern. Im Vergleich dazu betragen die gegenwärtigen Reserven in Nordamerika ca. 40 Mrd Barrel.

Die Autoren dieser Studie glauben darüber hinaus, dass die Welt das Äquivalent von 5 Mio. Barrel pro Tag des Schiefergases im Jahr 2020 produzieren könnte, was aktuell einer täglichen Produktionsmenge von Irak und Kanada entspricht.

Aufgrund der exorbitanten Kosten können diese Produktionsmengen vermutlich erst nach einem Vorlauf von einem Jahrzehnt realisiert werden. Der IHS-Forscher Steve Trammel sagte in diesem Zusammenhang, dass „eine Produktion von 5 Mio. Barrel pro Tag wahrscheinlich die Welt des Ölmarktes revolutionieren werde„.
